Probiotics, or supplementary beneficial bacteria, may help support a healthy normal immune system and the healthy lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
Over 400 different species of bacteria normally reside in the human gastrointestinal tract, with approximately 35-50% of the contents of the human colon composed of bacteria. In a gastrointestinal system that is functioning well the populations of beneficial bacteria and pathogenic (i.e. disease-causing) bacteria are balanced.
Keeping intestinal bacteria in balance plays an important role in our general health and wellbeing. The ‘good’ bacteria support the immune response. They also compete with pathogenic bacteria for space and nutrients within the gastrointestinal tract.
What is in it?
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG®) and Bifidobacterium animalis (BB-12®) 2 billion organisms - both have been extensively studied in children and adults. These strains have been shown to colonise the bowel and help support a healthy normal immune system and the healthy lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Research suggests that LGG may help reduce the incidence and severity of mild upper respiratory tract infections, such as colds, among children in daycare. It may also help to reduce the number of days absent from daycare due to illness. Both strains also help to reduce the frequency and duration of diarrhoea in young children at daycare as well as help with the maintenance of intestinal flora after antibiotic use.
Not to be used in children under 2 years of age without medical advice. Use with caution in severely ill children and premature infants. If diarrhoea persists for more than 12 hours in children under 3 years seek medical advice. May cause a mild and temporary increase in flatulence. Antibiotics may decrease the efficacy of probiotics. If antibiotics are being used, Daycare Defence should be taken at least 2 hours after a dose.
