Skin 200g vital-i-TEA Organic Herbal Tea

What it does:

vital-i-TEA Skin Organic Herbal Tea works to nourish your skin from the inside; by considering both the skin itself and its relationships with other body systems, the skin is gradually nourished to a state of natural glow and vitality, a mirror of the inner state.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body, the direct interface between or outer and inner environments. While many of us concern ourselves primarily with the skins role in the way we present ourselves to the world, it's worth understanding its organic and functional place in the body. Our skin plays a major role in protection from microbial infections, injury, ultraviolet light rays, and exposure to chemicals. Importantly, it is also a major channel of elimination for metabolic wastes and water through the sweat glands, which also secrete sebum to protect the skin and provide a living environment for the friendly bacteria that live on the skin and maintain a disease free surface. The skin also regulates body temperature; surface blood circulation opens during times of warmth and reduces in colder moments, internalising to keep our other organs warm. With this diverse range of functions it's easy to see that maintaining skin health will often involve more than topical applications to maintain its true vitality. Traditional medicine views the skin's state as a reflection of the blood, in particular the plasma (watery part of blood) that rises to the surface to reveal itself. Several 'windows' into the body reveal themselves on the skins surface as patchy discolorations, dry or oily skin, acne, broken spider veins etc, in addition to a range of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis. The skin bears a close relationship to other organ systems, especially the lungs (where blood releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen to nourish skin) and the liver, where waste products are filtered from the blood and the oils, which keep the skin nourished, are metabolised for distribution. Lastly it's worth remembering that the skin and nervous system both originally developed from the same tissue, and fluctuations in nervous tension are often reflected on the skin

What is in it?

  • Calendula (marigold flowers) - one of the first herbs to consider for the skin, calendula's action internally begins in the digestive system where its resin has an anti-microbial/ anti-fungal activity in addition to healing and restoring the lining of the digestive tract. Directly for the skin, it aids the circulation of lymph where immune processes occur and swellings or infections are cleared. Lastly, it contains significant carotenoids, which provide the golden colour of the flowers and are protective for aging or sun-damaged skin.
  • Burdock - otherwise known as 'Natures Great Cleanser'. The principle action of Burdock is 'depurative' which improves the detoxification process of the body and alters the health state of the blood via the liver. It has been used both for infective conditions such as acne, boils or septic disorders where the skin it prone to eruptions. In addition it can be useful in the management of long term of chronic inflammations in conjunction with other herbs to moderate its action.
  • Red Clover - the flowers of red clover have become popular for their use as a phyto-estrogen content, however their traditional use has been as a gentle blood cleanser in times of stagnation or congestion and an expectorant for the lungs. Both are reflected in the condition of the skin with healthier lungs; more able to disperse oxygen to the skin via a cleaner, less tainted blood.
  • Dandelion Root - the common Dandelion is one of the oldest, most effective yet gentle aids to liver function. It stimulates the whole digestive process: It is a bitter, which helps stimulate digestive juice and bile secretion, which in turn aids digestion, assimilation of our food, and enhances our bowel function. It also encourages the production of bile in the liver, flow to the gall bladder and then into our digestive tract. This effect improves the skin through adequate digestion of vital nutrients-vitamins, minerals and essential fats required for skin health.
  • Nettle - naturally rich in minerals and vitamins, like iron, silica and Vitamin C; all of which are crucial for maintaining skin structure and tone. The high chlorophyll content effectively cleanses and builds the blood through the renewal of red blood cells. It is also great for the lymphatic system, which is linked to fluid retention problems.
  • Schisandra - the five flavoured berries of this vine from China were traditionally used to strengthen and consolidate the body's vital energy reserves. Modern use has added to this application in their use for liver damage, liver disease or toxicity and insufficiency. They also aid in the adaptation to stress where it affects memory and concentration. In addition this herb harmonizes the blend of herbs with a pleasant lemony taste.
