The mechanisms by which the sun and other environmental factors impair the skin are varied but revolve heavily around the production of molecular species known as “free radicals”. Free radicals are highly unstable molecules which can cause widespread damage and destruction to proteins, lipids (fats) and DNA. Considering skin cells are made up primarily of proteins, lipid and DNA it is easy to understand why we wouldn’t want any more free radicals formed within our skin than absolutely necessary.
Our skin naturally contains anti-free radical protective enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase however not only does UV exposure deplete their amounts, it also creates further free radicals.
What is in it?
This cosmetic contains the revolutionary ingredient Venuceane TM which is obtained from the fermentation of the bacterium Thermus thermophilus. This bacteria is found in the Pacific Ocean and grows optimally in extreme conditions (termed an “extremophile”), including extreme temperature, pressure and pH where free radical concentration is tremendous. Venuceane possesses activity that mimics the anti-free radical (anti-oxidant) protective enzymes found naturally in the skin, such as SOD, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Venuceane provides much stronger protection to the skin than more commonly known vitamin antioxidants such as Vitamin E. In fact, in vivo test showed that Venuceane is capable of protecting against lipid peroxidation and DNA damage from UVA radiation.
