Pimples usually result from irritation, infection or over-activity of the skin's oil glands (often hormonal) that lead to clogged pores and bacterial infection. The clogging of skin pores prevents sebum from reaching the surface of the skin through a pore. The mixture of oil and dead cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the plugged pore. There are many myths about what causes pimples. Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed, but foods seem to have little effect on the development and course of pimples in most people.

Zit Zapper is a combination containing naturally derived ingredients that work together to cleanse the affected area, help calm inflammation and unclog pores. Zit Zapper New & Improved also contains Tea Tree Oil that has antibacterial properties.
- Tea Tree – Obtained from leaves and branchlets of Australian tree Melaleuca Alternifolia, it has antibacterial properties and has been shown to assist in the treatment of skin infections, including acne blemishes
- Witch Hazel – A skin freshener and astringent made from the leaves of the Hamamalis Virginiana tree. Traditionally used as tonic and astringent in the treatment of irritations and local inflammation of the skin
- Salicylic Acid - antimicrobial action and reduces follicle blockage which helps to clear out infected pores. It also has keratolytic activity which helps to dissolve the top layer of skin cells, allowing oil, dead skin cells and bacteria to escape from under the skin
- Zinc Sulphate - acts as an astringent and is useful in the healing of the tissue, preventing scarring, as well as being anti-inflammatory
