A man with medically diagnosed BPH often has to urinate more frequently, especially at night, and can experience less force and calibre while urinating, often dribbling. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. The prostate is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, where urine is stored. The prostate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body. One of the main roles of the prostate is to squeeze fluid into the urethra as sperm move through during sexual climax. This fluid, which helps make up semen, energizes the sperm and makes the vaginal canal less acidic. Medically diagnosed Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a condition that affects the prostate gland in men. The prostate is a gland found between the bladder (where urine is stored) and the urethra (the tube urine passes through). In some men, as they age, the prostate gland gets bigger (or enlarges). As the prostate gets bigger, it may press on the urethra and cause the flow of urine to be slower and less forceful. The word ‘benign’ means an enlargement that isn’t caused by cancer. Saw Palmetto - a dwarf palm tree found in the United States from the Carolinas to Texas. For centuries, the crude extracts of Saw palmetto have been used for it’s health benefits. Today Saw Palmetto extract is highly popular and clinically tested for symptomatic relief of medically diagnosed BPH. Saw Palmetto can assist with symptoms such as frequent and painful urination and nocturia.
Lycopene - is a member of the carotenoid family. It is similar to other carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lutein, alpha-carotene, and Zeaxanthin. Lycopene is present to some extent in many vegetables, but the highest concentration is found in tomatoes. Lycopene cannot be produced by the body and must be included in the diet. Lycopene has an effect on our health, primarily because of its action as an antioxidant. Studies have shown that lycopene is effective in counteracting harmful free radicals.
Zinc - found in high concentrations in the prostate gland and semen. Men need more zinc than women because male semen contains many times more zinc than found in the blood. The recommended amounts of zinc for adult men are higher than those for women.
